Matters of the Crutch: Ink and Paper Quality First
Posted on July 05 2017
You can easily create a crutch for your joint out of most card-like material. Old business cards are a common lifesaver for joint tokers: you pull one out of your wallet, tear it to size, and tuck the rest away for later. But many smoke enthusiasts don’t realize these traditional business cards are printed on paper produced unsustainably with inks that are petroleum- and soy-based. These inks are hazardous, and with many more refined products on the market these days, joint smokers are blessed with options for creating crutches out of more eco- and smoke-friendly materials.
The Quality of the Crutch
If you are going to roll up a fatty to enjoy with friends, always be sure to have what you need on hand. This means investing in a decent grinder or scissors (we’re old school), high-quality papers, and a selection of crutches. Here at Crutch Card, we think it just makes sense to use hemp. If you’re a smoker, you need to purchase some hemp crutches. If you’re a smoker with style, you’ll want Crutch Cards!
Why Choose Hemp?
Hemp papers, like the ones featured in our Crutch Paper Packs, are preferred by many smoke enthusiasts because they tend to burn more evenly and more slowly than traditional rolling papers. They’re also virtually tasteless, allowing the sensational and unique flavors you roll up to sneak past the smokiness. Equally as important, hemp paper provides a more sustainable way to smoke.
Did you know 7.5 billion trees are cut down every year just for paper?
The processing of trees for paper pulp takes an immense about of energy and water, as well as produces pounds of greenhouse gases and solid waste. That’s not even taking into account the chemicals that go into tree farming and paper production. You wanna roll that up and smoke it? Probably not.
That’s why we use sustainably sourced and American made hemp paper to create our crutches. This hemp paper, supplied by Hemp Press, is smoke-friendly and acid-, chlorine-, and chemical-free.
When compared with traditional tree paper, choosing hemp paper results in:
- 45% less energy use
- 38% fewer greenhouse gasses produced
- 45% less wastewater generated
- 50% less solid waste created
- 100% less wood use
Why Our Inks Matter
It shouldn’t surprise you to hear old business cards aren’t intended for smoking purposes. The petroleum- and soy-based inks used for most commercial printing are labeled as hazardous by Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA). OHSA is the main federal agency responsible for the enforcement of health and safety legislation in the United States. Petroleum- and soy-based inks may contain heavy metals and other toxins that, when heated, can turn into smoke: probably not what you want to be inhaling!
We use a proprietary blend of water-based inks, labeled non-hazardous by OHSA, that are designed specifically for use on crutches for smoking.
Crutchcard crutches are available in a variety of sizes and styles. You can customize your Crutch Cards and even work with our design team to make sure your Crutch Cards fit the needs of your business and brand.
